MICHEL MORISSETTE

Michel Morissette, musicien d’origine franco-italienne, est un artiste établi sur la scène jazz depuis deux décennies. Guitariste et compositeur, il a construit une carrière dédiée au jazz et à la fusion. Présenté à de nombreuses reprises au Festival International de Jazz de Montréal ainsi que dans plusieurs festivals au Québec et en Europe, il a séduit le public par un jeu à la fois énergique, sensible et ancré dans la tradition du bebop, tout en s’ouvrant aux couleurs du blues, du funk et du jazz-rock.

Avec quatre albums à son actif – The Boilerman (2004), Big City (2006), Nothing Toulouse (2014, Effendi) et Quatre (2024, Effendi) – il développe un univers musical marqué par l’intensité rythmique, des mélodies solides et un sens affirmé de l’improvisation. Nothing Toulouse a été salué comme "Album jazz de l’année" au Québec et acclamé à l’international, où la presse spécialisée l’a qualifié de « secret le mieux gardé du Canada ».

Son quartet actuel réunit Aron Doyle (trompette), Serge Dionne (basse électrique) et Magella Cormier (batterie). Ensemble, ils créent une musique vivante et spontanée, où se croisent la rigueur du jazz moderne et l’énergie du groove fusion. Chaque prestation témoigne d’une complicité rare et d’un désir constant de repousser les frontières du langage jazz.

Michel Morissette demeure aujourd’hui un guitariste incontournable du jazz québécois, reconnu autant comme soliste inventif que comme compositeur original. Son plus récent opus "Quatre" illustre l’aboutissement d’un parcours mûri, tout en ouvrant une nouvelle étape dans son exploration musicale, entre jazz et fusion.

Michel Morissette, a Franco-Italian musician, has been an established artist on the jazz scene for over two decades. Guitarist and composer, he has built a career dedicated to jazz and fusion. Featured many times at the Montreal International Jazz Festival as well as in festivals across Quebec and Europe, he has captivated audiences with a style that is both energetic and sensitive, rooted in bebop tradition while embracing the colors of blues, funk and jazz-rock.

With four albums to his credit – The Boilerman (2004), Big City (2006), Nothing Toulouse (2014, Effendi) and Quatre (2024, Effendi) – he has developed a musical universe driven by rhythmic intensity, strong melodies, and a clear sense of improvisation. Nothing Toulouse was acclaimed as Jazz Album of the Year in Quebec and praised internationally, where the specialized press described him as “Canada’s best kept secret.”

His current quartet brings together Aron Doyle (trumpet), Serge Dionne (electric bass) and Magella Cormier (drums). Together, they create music that is vibrant and spontaneous, blending the rigor of modern jazz with the energy of fusion grooves. Each performance highlights the rare complicity of the group and a constant desire to push the boundaries of jazz language.

Today, Michel Morissette stands as an essential guitarist of Quebec’s jazz scene, recognized both as an inventive soloist and as an original composer. His most recent album "Quatre" marks the culmination of a matured journey, while opening a new chapter in his musical exploration between jazz and fusion
