JOCELYN MÉNARD

Saxophoniste, compositeur et arrangeur, Jocelyn Ménard est un musicien de jazz d’origine canadienne. Formé à Montréal (Concordia University), à New York auprès de George Coleman et à Paris avec Bernard Maury, il a partagé la scène avec des artistes tels que Jean Beaudet, Rémi Bolduc et Vic Vogel, et s’est produit dans de nombreux festivals internationaux.

Installé en Guadeloupe depuis 1988 en tant que musicien-formateur, il collabore régulièrement avec André Condouant, Happy Lewis, Christian Amour et Charlie Chomereau-Lamotte. Il fonde plusieurs projets en big band (Big Band Mavounzy, Gwadloup Big Band) ainsi qu’en petites formations (Men Art Jazz 4tet, An’nax, Guanada), aux côtés de musiciens comme Normand Deveault, Raymond Grégo, Raymond d’Huy ou encore Dominique Bérose. En 1997, il crée sa propre école de musique.

En plus de nombreuses collaborations discographiques autour du jazz caribéen, il publie en 2001 son premier album, Men Art Work’s, avec la participation du pianiste Alain Jean-Marie. En 2007, il présente son projet Gwanada en sextet et big band au Festival de Jazz de Pointe-à-Pitre, avec la collaboration de Michel Cusson, François Théberge et Rémi Bolduc. Son album Terre Mère, paru en décembre 2012, donne lieu à une série de concerts remarqués (Ilôt Jazz, After Jazz, La Rotonde, Le Baisé Salé, Rencontres autour du Piano, etc.).

En mai 2013, Jocelyn Ménard se produit en duo avec Mario Canonge. Il joue régulièrement avec sa formation, le Jocelyn Ménard Caribbean Jazz Group, notamment lors de la clôture du Festival du Blues de Marie-Galante en juin 2017, au Créole Beach Hôtel, ainsi que dans le cadre des concerts Mix Art à la salle Robert Loyson et au centre culturel de Sonis en avril 2018.

Il est également invité à de nombreux projets : avec le Jean-Michel Lesdel Ensemble pour le festival Ilôt Jazz (décembre 2017), au concert d’ouverture de la saison 2018-2019 de la Scène nationale L’Artchipel aux côtés de Frédéric Caracas, dans le projet du pianiste *Jocelyn Marboeuf (Ngo Ya Katiopa), ou encore avec le Tanmpo Jazz de Jérôme Castry.

En juillet 2019, il crée « Pwofési A Man Jàn », un spectacle musical pluridisciplinaire mêlant danse, vidéo-projection et lumières, présenté au Centre culturel Sonis en Guadeloupe.

Depuis 2021, il multiplie les tournées : une série de concerts sous son nom et avec diverses formations au Québec (été 2021 et 2022), une participation au projet autour de la musique de Wayne Shorter avec le quartet d’Alain Bédard et le Effendi Jazzlab Orchestra (2023). Parallèlement, il est membre du groupe Caribbean Thing du saxophoniste Xavier Richardeau, avec lequel il donne une série de concerts en France en 2022, notamment au Duc des Lombards, où la formation revient en avril 2023 avant d’enregistrer un album.

Avec son Caribbean Jazz Group, Jocelyn Ménard s’est produit au Baisé Salé en avril 2023 puis en tournée au Canada à l’automne 2023. De nouveaux concerts ont eu lieu en 2024 en France, tant avec son propre groupe qu’avec celui de Xavier Richardeau. Enfin, la sortie du nouvel album du Jocelyn Ménard Caribbean Jazz Group, « Vibes A Péyi Là », est annoncée pour l'automne 2025.

Le Caribbean Jazz Group de Jocelyn Ménard met la Caraïbe au centre d’une fusion où le jazz et la danse sont omniprésents. Le leader, saxophoniste et compositeur, originaire de Montréal, met ainsi à profit son expérience, depuis plus de trente ans qu’il est établi en Guadeloupe. Il poursuit la voie initiée avec son album Terre-Mère – et même encore plus tôt au sein du trio Guanada – en proposant des compositions qui mêlent jazz, gwoka, funk, biguine et même zouk, dans la droite ligne d’orchestres mythiques comme le Caraïbes Jazz Ensemble, Tropic Fusion, Fal Frett etc.

Le Jocelyn Ménard Caribbean Jazz Group évolue déjà depuis plusieurs années en Guadeloupe et dans la Caraïbe. Jocelyn Ménard a rassemblé autour de lui une équipe constituée de talentueux et fidèles compagnons de route. Citons Jean-Michel Lesdel ou Jonathan Jurion (pn), Sonny Troupé (drs) et Klod Kiavué (perc), dont les expériences conjuguées touchent des sommets (Kenny Garrett, David Murray, Robert Oumaou, Jean-Christophe Maillard, Lisa Simone, Jacques Schwarz-Bart, Franck Nicolas, Kafé…). Le bassiste Régis Thérèse (Caraib II Jazz, Bago, Mizikopeyi) et la chanteuse Leedyah Barlagne (Dominik Coco, Christian Laviso, Raymond d’Huy) complètent le sextet actuel.

On passe ainsi d’un padjanbel à un blues, d’une biguine à un mendé, dans un registre où latin jazz et swing ne sont jamais loin. La musique du Caribbean Jazz Group prend la définition du mot fusion au pied de la lettre et vous laissera tout sauf indifférent, dans une ambiance où la température grimpe sans limite.

Canadian-born saxophonist, composer, and arranger Jocelyn Ménard has been a central figure in Caribbean jazz for over three decades. After studies in Montreal, New York with George Coleman, and Paris with Bernard Maury, he performed with Jean Beaudet, Rémi Bolduc, Vic Vogel, and appeared at numerous international festivals before settling in Guadeloupe in 1988.

Deeply rooted in the island’s musical traditions, Ménard has collaborated with André Condouant, Alain Jean-Marie, Sonny Troupé, Klod Kiavué, and many others. His projects range from intimate quartets to large ensembles, including the Gwanada Big Band, which he presented at the Pointe-à-Pitre Jazz Festival in 2007.

His recordings, including Men Art Work’s (2001) and Terre Mère (2012), reflect his unique fusion of jazz, gwoka, biguine, funk, and zouk. With his group, the Caribbean Jazz Group, he has performed at major venues and festivals across Guadeloupe, France, and Canada.

Ménard is also an active collaborator: he has taken part in pianist Jocelyn Marboeuf’s Ngo Ya Katiopa, Alain Bédard’s Wayne Shorter project, Effendi Jazzlab Orchestra and saxophonist Xavier Richardeau’s Caribbean Thing, performing notably at the Duc des Lombards in Paris.

His multidisciplinary creation Pwofési A Man Jàn (2019) blended music, dance, and visual arts, confirming his appetite for artistic exploration. Recent tours in Canada (2021–2023) strengthened his transatlantic ties, and his most recent project is the recording of the Caribbean Jazz Group’s new album “Vibes A Péyi Là”, announced for autumn 2025.
